E.P. Guidi constructed the Springfield Literacy Center, a 50,000-square-foot elementary school serving kindergarten and first-grade students. At the time of its completion, the facility marked the district’s first new school in more than 50 years, representing a major investment in early education and sustainable design.
Built under a lump sum contract, the project features classroom wings organized around shared learning spaces, with specialized areas for art, science, and reading. Outdoor learning environments include a treehouse classroom, science and sculpture gardens, and an alphabet walk that extends the educational experience across the site.
The building incorporates numerous sustainable features that support its LEED Gold certification, including a geothermal heating system, green roof, and comprehensive recycling systems. Together, these systems reduce energy consumption and provide students with visible examples of environmental stewardship.

Construction required careful coordination to maintain safety and access on an active school campus shared with the existing middle school. All workers were required to complete district background clearances and badging, and site logistics were planned to separate construction activities from student areas. When rock was encountered during excavation, E.P. Guidi adapted site phasing and equipment to maintain schedule for the completion of new parking and athletic fields during summer recess.
The Springfield Literacy Center reflects E.P. Guidi’s experience building educational environments that combine innovation, sustainability, and community impact.
